The year was 1989 and the day was August 19th. The place was Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. The dormitory was Camphor Hall. The floor was C-Level 1. In room C-105 there was a young man from Alexandria, LA by way of Japan named Bobby J. Williams. Next door to him in room C-107 was a young man from the Motor City, Detroit, MI named Jimmie K. Malone. It was here that this story begins. Although these two future business partners and "brothers in crime" lived next door to one another, back in '89 these two young men were cool but traveled in two different circles. But it was Mass Communications (the major that they both coincidentally shared) that birthed their friendship, partnership, and mutual vision.
In 1991, the two began their sophomore year. It was the first time that these two would actually have a class together. The class was entitled "Introduction to Mass Communications". It was on the first day of this class that each student was asked to stand and share with everyone what their career goals were. Out of the 30 plus students, two ambitious and precocious young men stood up and stated that they wanted to be music producers. It was then that Bobby Williams and Jimmie Malone knew that they had more in common than their individual dreams.
As the two ventured into their junior years, both young men followed the Dillard University Mass Communications' Department suggested schedule to a "T". Being that their mutual career focus was music production and there was no such curriculum at that time in any Historical Black College and/or University, the two studied basic Television and Radio Production. The two excelled at both but it was in Radio Production that the two found their niche. The two began to DJ their own radio shows individually on the University's radio station WDUB. By October of 1991, they began DJ-ing the school's basketball games, step shows, dances, parties, and whatever they were asked to do. In the spring of 1992, the two dubbed themselves THICK n' THIN. They declared domination on anything musical that came to D.U. Also, it was at this time that Jim and Bob started honing their skills as MC's. So on top of being a DJ tandem, they also were capable of dropping 16 bars of heat on any instrumental. They were also known for breaking records in the New Orleans area on their radio shows that would later become R&B and Hip Hop classics. "Deep Cover" by Dr. Dre and his then protege Snoop Doggy Dogg, "Scenario(Remix)" by A Tribe Called Quest featuring The Leaders of The New School, "She's Got That Vibe", "Slow Jam" and "Honey Love" by R.Kelly and Public Announcement, "Don't Walk Away" by Jade and "Come and Talk To Me(Remix)" by Jodeci were just a few of the songs that these two young men unleashed to their audiences way back then. This obviously showed that these two young men had an ear, an eye and talent for knowing what was HOT.
The two finished their college educations at Dillard in 1993. These two friends went two totally different ways but remained close. Bob went on to work for WLOX in Biloxi, MS. There he cultivated the skills and lessons that he acquired at Dillard and grew within the station as well as the community. It was there that he also nurtured his incredible talent for all things audio and visual. He is a master in this realm of television production. Recently, Bob has gone on to use his extraordinary people skills to create a new career in real estate. Even in all his personal success, there was something missing.
Jim took an entirely different path. After suffering unimaginable personal tragedies in the span of 3 years, Jim moved to Chicago in the summer of 1994. There he began a successful career in Human and Social Services. As a Guest Speaker and Program Director, he has helped uncountable numbers of teenagers, single mothers, and people with disabilities in the Chicago-land area make changes in their personal lives. These formative years in his career nurtured his penchant for individual development and life coaching. Becoming a stylist/image consultant fed his desire to be on the cutting edge of fashion and style. Recently, he has gone on to use his extraordinary people skills to create a new career in real estate appraisal. But even in all his personal success, there was something missing.
In the early 90's, Jim and Bob dreamed of having a business together. They always wanted to show the world something new and something special. They always felt they were two steps ahead of the game. Jim and Bob always new that they would make it. Somehow they knew that they could and that they would make it happen. The year, 2008; the day, February 15th. The fellas took it back to where it all started from - New Orleans, LA. The sports and entertainment worlds were collectively focused on The 2008 NBA All Star Game being held in The Big Easy. But these two old friends were focused on something else, something old; something new. They were focused on the old dream that never died. And in remembrance of this old dream with a new vision and future, they have named their renewed partnership "Jim & Bob...SInce '89". "...Since '89" is not just a company, it is a movement. It represents the best of these young men's lifestyles. Their first endeavor is dubbed G.G.T., better known as "Girls Grown Tall". This venture is essentially about being confident, sexy, and proud of one's self. Their initial launch will not only showcase their love for women, it will essentially show that there is something special and unique about the women who are chosen to represent the Girls Grown Tall and Jim & Bob...Since '89.
